What's it all about?

This interactive computer based training course has been specifically designed to allow you to satisfy the requirements of Part 92 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations (1998) relating to dangerous goods training, in the convenience of your own home and at your own pace.

The aim of the course is to make you aware of the existence of dangerous goods; and to enable you to recognise and identify them if and when they are presented for transport on your aircraft, so that you can take appropriate action. It also permits you to accept non-hazardous cargo consigned for air transport, as well as passengers' baggage and personal effects. The course, however, is not intended to make you a dangerous goods expert, and having completed it, you are still not permitted to accept dangerous goods, although you may carry them if someone duly qualified has accepted them in accordance with procedures detailed in the company dangerous goods manual.

The course is approved as an interactive computer based course by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority under Civil Aviation Safety Regulation 92.140. The course Instrument Number is MLDG 231-08, and the date of approval is 29 October 2008.

How does it work?

The course provides you with all relevant information relating to the syllabus, including relevant sample extracts from other publications. No additional reference material is required, although you may wish to have a copy of Part 92 of the CASR's handy. Throughout the course, reference is made to these other publications, but it is not essential that you refer to them as they contain more detail than is required in the syllabus.

The course is composed of a number of units, each of which are subdivided into sections. Either a complete section or a part of a section is shown on the screen at any given time, usually together with a question - these screens of information are termed pages.

Read each page of information carefully, and answer any associated questions. The course is non-linear, and may be completed in any order - the computer will track your progress, provide you with continuous feedback, and ensure that you complete all sections. You may choose to browse the entire course first and then come back to do the questions, or you may answer the questions as you go. Usually, questions relate to the current screen of information, or else the preceding 2 or 3 pages.

Once you have read all the pages and successfully completed the required preliminary questions you will be eligable to attempt the final multiple choice exam.

There is no charge to complete the course up to this point (in effect you can try before you buy). If you now wish to complete the course by attempting the final exam, payment will be required. Course costs are provided below, and payment methods are outlined in the payment section which can be accessed by clicking on the 'Payment' button above.

The exam is open book (you can refer back to all previous material that you have read and alternate between the course material and exam questions by clicking on the 'Course' and 'Exam' buttons above) and effectively there is no time limit. The computer will generate 40 unique multiple choice questions for each exam you attempt, and the pass mark is 80%. Hopefully, you'll only need to sit one exam!?

In the unlikely event that you do not pass the first time, you will be personally contacted by phone, debriefed, and advised as to what to do next. In future, an additional small fee ($16.50) may be charged for each attempt to cover the costs of the debrief and to provide you with an incentive to get it right the first time!!

Once you have successfully completed the final exam by correctly answering 32 or more questions, you will immediately be able to down load a certificate as validation of having successfully completed the course of training.

Print off a copy of your certificate, give it to your employer to put on their records, and you're covered for 2 years.

Is there a human face to all this technology?

As you may have gathered, the course provides you with continuous interactive feedback - to help you get through the material as quickly and easily as possible. The feedback you receive is directly related to how well you answer the preliminary questions.

There are three types of preliminary question - free text, multiple choice and yes/no (or true/false). If you answer the question correctly the first time, you will be rewarded with the next page. If you answer all questions correctly the first time, you will be able to complete the course by answering the minimum number of preliminary questions required, within the shortest possible time - nominally about 4 hours. If you answer a question incorrectly, you will be given another similar question until you get it right. The number of attempts to get it right will directly affect the total number of preliminary questions you will be required to do to complete the relevant section.

So you can see that any attempt to guess your way through the course only prolongs the exercise! Yes, you may eventually complete the course by trial and error - but you will probably be too old to have any use for it!! Oh …. and by the way, the question pool is quite vast - so each candidate gets a completely different bunch of questions.

Also, be CAREFUL which button you press after entering your answer. You should press the grey NEXT button within the question box. This enters your answer into the computer and will give you an immediate response indicating whether or not you have answered the question correctly. If you inadvertantly press the green NEXT PAGE button at the bottom of the screen outside the question box, your answer will not be entered into the computer and you will be sent to the next page with no indication of whether or not you have answered that question correctly; and your answer will be lost and you will have to repeat the question. The occasional candidate has managed to complete the entire course in this fashion only to realise at the end that they needed to go through the whole exercise again and press the correct button after each question. That's why the progress button is there. Use it occasionally to monitor your progress throughout the course and avoid a nasty surprise at the end!!
